A Note on this Page
The number and percentage of computers in Bangladesh is insignificant.  Due to this, all these numbers are VERY rough estimates. In addition, the statistics related to information technology are growing at an extremely fast rate in Bangladesh.  Due to this fact, the information on this page may have been accurate when the numbers were originally recorded, but could be completely inaccurate now.

Military
Data Unknown.  This is a tightly regulated country.  Any governmental statistics is unusual to find. However, about 50% of the country's companies are governmentally owned or regulated.  The 1998 government budget was for $5.5 billion in expenditures, including capital expenditures (3). This is about 25% of the GDP.  This is a crude estimate, but anywhere from 25 to 50% of all IT spending probably comes from the government.

Households
According to the World Fact Book, there were 0 mobile phones, fax machines, and personal computers per 1,000 people in 1997 (1).  However, an estimate done this year indicated that there are approximately 90,000 desktop PCs in Bangladesh (2).  Be cautioned, I have seen another report that says there are 50,000 computers in all of Bangladesh, in 1999(5).  In addition, the computer market is increasing at a 15-20%(2). In addition, poor people, which account for the bulk of Bangladesh, are becoming IT users.  For instance, cell phones are booming in the rural areas.

This year's computer fair was visited by 350,000 people.  The exhibition included a new product launching site and separate sites for IT education and Internet Service Providers (ISPs).  That is under 1% of the 130 million people in Bangladesh.  IT opportunities in Bangladesh are widely untapped (6).

Labor

Bangladesh is mainly an agricultural country.  People take out loans for fertilizer!  However, I would estimate that 10% of the computer in circulation by non IT companies are used in the industries of Bangladesh.  This estimate is because 6% of all businesses report they got a computer virus this year (5).
