The Digital Divide in El Salvador
With a population of approximately six million people,
almost half live in poverty. According to a NUA survey in April of 2000,
only about 40,000 Salvadorans were online, only .65% of the total population.
Many of the people that are online are a part of the higher educational
system, with the majority connecting to the Internet at the university
level.

Most Internet use is highly concentrated among educators,
students and the wealthy. No specific government programs were found
that encouraged or supported Internet use among the general population.
In May 2000, Telemovil announced that it would begin to offer high-speed
wireless Internet services to more than 50,000 customers. Telemovil
is a private cellular provider in El Salvador.
