El Salvador's privacy laws are comparable to those of other countries in Central America and the United States.  Legislation has passed during the past decade to make privacy, copyright, intellectual property and other laws comparable to those of developed nations with the hopes of attracting foreign direct investment.

Although legislation has passed and laws exist to protect these rights, they are still subject to enforcement by the government.  As mentioned under the Legal Environment page, enforcement of intellectual property laws has only recently begun.  Privacy in terms of illegal wiretaps also remains a problem among many Latin American countries including El Salvador.  This phenomena was prevalent in the early and mid 1990s, it remains unclear if this has subsided.
