The Information Technology landscape in
(NAMIBIA)

About Namibia  Electronic Commerce:

In Namibia, Electronic Commerce or E-Commerce is yet to develop.  Most users of the Internet at this time, use it for E-mails, research and as a learning tool.  However, there are some indications that, this will change in the near future.  For instance, ABC Bucherdienst GmbH, German's biggest online bookseller (www.telebuck.de) , has set up part of its online operation in Swakopmund, a seaside town on the edge of the Namib desert.

The operation in Namibia handles about one quarter of the company's customer service, such as online customer order-taking.  There is no business to business e-commerce or business to individual customers in Namibia at the present time.

It will take a little while for e-commerce to take hold in Namibia.  The country is still in it's infancy stage of development.  The government is trying to attract foreign investors to the country to help develop the economy of the country, as foreign investors invest in the country, it may help to develop e-commerce.

Also, Namibia, unlike its neighbor South Africa does not have the necessary telecommunication infrastructures that would enable the country to conduct e-commerce.  The necessary telecommunication infrastructures are just been developed, therefore, e-commerce and other modern usage of telecommunication as a maiden of transaction will take a while to flourish in most of the third world of which, Namibia is one.
