IT Geographics:
Namibia is not a country that is associated with Information technology advances. No particular region or city in the country is noted for its high tech innovations. The country is not a rush to develop a high tech identity or prominence, as long as it continues to depend on import from South Africa. The only location that holds a promise as a high tech incubator in the future, is the University of Namibia, where there are various programs promoting development of software and hardware internally. (2) It will be hard for Namibia to develop a high-tech corridor similar to Silicon Valley in the U.S., given the level of its dependence on imported goods and services from South Africa. Also, Namibia does not have what it take to establish a high-tech corridor. Because, the country has not develop IT talents pool with potential enough to establish such a high-tech corridor. Another reason why, Namibia would not be able to develop a technopolis in the near future is lack of funds to undertake research and develop that is necessary to the development of new software and hardware. The size of Namibia's population would make it hard for the existence of a high-tech corridor in the country. Namibia has a population of less than 2 million, and most of the labor force is spread among mining, fish processing plants and tourism jobs. The skills required for jobs in these sectors are quite different for what is necessary for establishing a successful high-tech corridor. This page was last updated: 12/16/99 Thanks for stopping by!
