Something About Me

My name is Jenny and I have been putting together this project for a class at the Kogod School of Business, at American University. The class is called the Impact of National Information Technology Environments on Business and it is taught by Professor Carmel.  You can see other student reports if you visit the classes home page. There is an amazing amount of information there and I suggest that you take some time and check it out:  Student Reports

I am a graduate student and although I have loved my experience here and am so excited about everything that I have learned since school began, I am ready to get out of here and get to work!

Living in Washington D.C. is a trip and I highly recommend it as a great city to check out, crash for a while, get an education or land a great job. But don't get too comfortable...nobody does. It is a transient city and it is a rarity to meet anyone who moved here with the objective of staying here for good.  It seems that just about everyone has a five year plan and more often than not, within that five years, they are planning to take off for something new.  But this also makes it an exciting city - because people are focused on what they want.  Me,  I am getting a little nervous about getting too comfortable here in the District and I'm thinking that when the degrees are in hand, I will take the next flight out of town in search of employment.  Maybe to France, because I love speaking French, or to Boston, because I'm a native New Englander and long to be back up North, or to Namibia, because I miss my friends and kids who I left behind.....or maybe to Thailand, because even though I have never been there, and what I know is only from my IT research, documentaries and friends, I really believe that this country is something special...and I would like to see it for myself.

What I'm Thinking    back to top

Soon enough I will be graduating with a degree in International Development and an MBA and I am eager to explore the role that technology and business plays in development throughout the world. My direct experience in the field of development was in Namibia, where I spent a year teaching primary school in a rural village.  While I was there, I realized that there are so many people in this world who have the potential to do fabulous things - both on a local and national level, but the numerous obstacles that exist prevent these people from seeking the opportunities that will allow them to pursue their ideas, goals and dreams. I knew that I would eventually return to my home in the States and that there, I would be able to continue with an education and eventually move forward into a career that I love and that I am passionate about. This makes me lucky. I understand that the opportunities that I have been able to pursue are not available to so many people in the world. This lack of opportunity is the gap that I want to address. I do not believe in hand outs, but I do believe in helping people gain the opportunity to seek out their goals. This is why I believe in business, technology and development. I believe that these tools are the key to increasing opportunity for people throughout the world.
