Software Development Summary Korea’s software industry has historically not been as strongly developed as its hardware manufacturing. Nevertheless, Korea is developing its capability in this area, including in games software, and this is being supported by government funding. Software is the fastest growing sector in the IT industry. Since 1996, its annual growth rate stood at 30.6%. In particular, the computing services, including system integration, grew 50.4% in 1999, 15.5% in 2000 [1].
In 2000, production in Korea's software industry reached USD 6.8 billion and is expected to record a high growth rate of USD 30.3 per year in the next 5 years, which would be higher than the growth rates of other IT sectors as well as the GDP [1]. The size of the domestic software industry market is expected to reach up to USD 28.6 billion in 2005 from USD 5.6 billion in 1999 [1]. The government is planning to expand support for software research and development focusing on the component software industry. Moreover, for stronger software industry competitiveness in the software industry, strengthening the software support infrastructure, such as software support centers, expansion of enlightening campaigns to use authorized software, and rigid enforcement of private sector-initiated illegal copies are expected.
