The Information Technology landscape in Indonesia

Government Policies
AboutIndonesia  The Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (known as BPPT) is the premier agency for technology innovation and commercialization.   The development of the telecommunications sector has been a focus of the government.  The government’s policy/plan to stimulate growth in the IT sector involves opening the market to overseas investors and offering opportunities to expand local line networks, cellular operations, and satellite links. Since partial liberalization, overseas telecom companies have paid billions of dollars to secure places in Indonesia. However, under the WTO offering, Indonesia expects to keep foreign ownership restrictions at 35 percent equity.
Overseas investment has helped increase the number of fixed lines in Indonesia. As the government steadily reduces import tariffs to comply with the various WTO and ASEAN treaties, mobile phone handsets are becoming progressively cheaper; as a result, their use is expected to rise. Global System for Mobile (GSM) operators are forecast to account for two-thirds of market share.
