The Information Technology landscape in Indonesia

IT Usage
AboutIndonesia  Information technology usage has increased tremendously in the South East Asia region.  Personal computers are widely used by individuals, offices and industries.  More and more people are also enjoying the benefits that the Internet offers.   Both the private and government agencies are using the Internet to build websites in order to  provide fast access to information for its customers.  IT usage in the Philippines and Indonesia is expected to grow rapidly going in to the new millennium.

Personal computers are widely used by offices, industries and in the home.  During the period of 1992-1993, personal computer was mostly used by  offices and industries, and only small portion were used by individual home users.  However, in 1994, the number of individual users started to increase.

In 1995, 7% of computer users were individuals, and the rest were business users. Individual users increased to 13% of all users in the following year. Jakarta has the most individual users about 43% of the Indonesian total.  Home users in Bandung and in Surabaya comprise 13% and 11% of the national, respectively.

As result of increased income, higher education levels and greater awareness of advanced technology, the market for personal computers for individual home users is projected to grow, although this growth is expected to be concentrated in metropolitan areas.  Sophisticated personal computers are popular amongst teenagers and young executives.  It is estimated that in 1997, computer usage in that segment of the population will increase 20 - 25%.

In a recent news, MyWeb Inc. com has signed an agreement with a Singapore-based investments company to set up a new venture company that will launch nationwide WebTV services in Indonesia next year.   The joint venture seeks to bring affordable and easy Internet access for a large
spectrum of the Indonesian population," said L&M Group Investments, in a statement.

Penetration of personal computers and the Internet is low in Indonesia, where the expense to get online represents a major investment for many households. Internet set-top boxes are seen as a way to get large numbers of people online. Once connected to a television set and telephone line, the set-top boxes allow users to  access the Web and send and receive e-mail.
