The Information Technology landscape in Indonesia

Analysis : IT strengths and weaknesses
AboutIndonesia
We believe that the information technology infrastructure in Indonesia will experience tremendous growth in the next few years.  It seems that the economy is slowly beginning to recover after the economic crisis that hit the region in 1997.  Foreign investors have begun to look to Indonesia as a source of potential profitable investment.  The growing presence of multinationals in Indonesia can enhance the skills of the indigenous people as well as contribute mightily to the existing technology.

The Indonesian government is taking the issue of intellectual property rights more seriously.  Although some are doubtful of the seriousness of the government in combating piracy, of the Hopefully, this will  .  The increase in the number of Internet users is also strength for Indonesia.  More and more people are becoming more computer savvy and understand that technology plays a major role in the development of a country.

The weakness of IT in Indonesia lies in the under developing infrastructure due to years of government control over the telecommunications industry.  The government needs to deregulate and privatize more sectors in the economy in order to push the development of information technology and other industries.

The Indonesian government also needs to support the development of hardware and software manufacturing and development.  The two industries can be a major contributor to Indonesia’s export.  Legal issues such intellectual property rights have been a major deterrent to foreign investment in information technology.  In addition, only a small percentage of Indonesians are up to par with today’s technology, and even fewer are linked and are taking advantage of the growth of the Internet.
