The Information Technology landscape in Indonesia

Software Development
AboutIndonesia
Software development has seen an increase in both Indonesia and the Philippines.   However, software development is still far behind hardware manufacturing in the two countries.  This sector will likely improve significantly as more and more international companies such Microsoft and Oracle, make investments in this sector.

In 1996, the information technology business in Indonesia was
worth of US$ 1,110.4 million, an increase of  18.54% compared
with 1995.  From that figure, around 76.4% was the share for
hardware, 10.5% for software and the rest (13.1%) belonged to
services.

Electronic producers estimate that they have lost approximately $100 million per year because of electronic products that are smuggled in to Indonesia. President of the Electronic Marketer Club (EMC), Nugroho Sugiarto, estimates that about 40-50% of electronic products in the market are smuggled goods.  Most of the smuggled goods such as television and DVD players and tapes are coming in from China.  He also added that although these illegal activities have been reported to the authorities, no steps have been taken to curb the smuggling.

These illegal activities have flourished because of the geographic situation of Indonesia which consists of many islands.  Therefore, Port authorities have not been able to effectively monitor these activities.  Sugiarto is very optimistic in regards to the prospect of electronic business and industry in Indonesia.  In 1999, there is a 130% growth in the electronic business.
