Italy is one of the OECD countries with the largest trade deficit for communications equipment. They are in the company of countries such as the United States, Australia, Spain and the Netherlands.

There are two notable companies in the Italian Hardware Development market: Actatel Italia and STMicroelectronics. Alcatel Italia is an Italian company part of gruppo internazionale Alcatel, its global products represent all aspects of telephone and telegraph equipment telecommunications components, cables and Internet optics. Their revenues for 1999, in Italy alone, were 3,300 million lire, 9% of which was spent on research and development (296 million lire).

After a merger between Microelettronica of Italy and Thomson Semiconducterus of France in 1987 STMicroelectronics was formed. The company is headed by an Italian, Pasquale Pistorio and is the eighth largest semiconductor producer in the world. Italy is not a large exporter of hardware.
