Information Technology and The Russian Federation

"Central and Eastern Europe's IT market will be worth about $10 billion and will grow at about 15% per year.  The communications market is worth a further $25 billion" (Financial Times, Ltd., Oct. 2000).  IDT also notes the former Soviet states have already reached EU levels of IT investment relative to size of their economy.  These quotes address the potential of IT in the former Soviet countries including Russia.  However, speculation in Russia has already cost many investors dearly.  IT, like any other sector in society, does not develop in a vacuum and without the proper parallel investment in society's framework to compliment IT infrastructure, it will remain only potential.

This project is aimed at describing the current IT landscape in Russia and how other societal factors are influencing or hindering technological development.  Ultimately, the decision of whether or not Russia joins the globalization of business and becomes part of the world economy will depend on the level of IT in Russia and its proper and transparent use to further its own development.
