Stephen E. MacAvoy, PhD
Assistant Professor

Working in biogeochemistry and ecology, I am particularly interested in areas where marine and freshwater systems interface as well as hydrocarbon seep communities, such as those in the Gulf of Mexico.
Currently my freshwater work is being conducted in collaboration with Virginia Commonwealth University at the Rice Center for Environmental Studies (http://www.vcu.edu/rice/).

My studies include organic and isotope geochemistry as tools for understanding the nutrient dynamics in ecological systems.  I am using isotope signatures and specific biomarker compounds (such as fatty acids) to trace nutrients through ecosystems and individual organisms. I am also exploring the “fate” of organic compounds during diagenesis.
