YEAR III: 2006 Program Overview

Preparatory Workshop / Saturday in May 2006, Date TBA
Program Orientation - Eight visual arts teachers, two mathematics teachers, and two social studies teachers, who are selected by the project’s Advisory Board because of their exemplary lesson plans and action research projects, will gather on the campus of American University for a one-day intensive workshop to begin planning for the development of a Curriculum Guide to be written during the third Summer Institute.
Summer Institute / Summer 2006, Dates TBA
Development of a Curriculum Guide – During the third Summer Institute, eight visual arts teachers, two mathematics teachers, and two social studies teachers, who are selected by the project’s Advisory Board because of their exemplary lesson plans and action research projects, will return to the AU campus to develop a Curriculum Guide that incorporates the lesson plans that they developed and a map that relates them to the content standards for the visual arts, mathematics, and social studies. The work will be informed by the experiences teachers synthesize from their action research projects. The guide will be published in a binder, burned to a CD-ROM, and published on the project web site.
Citywide Art Conference / October 2006, Date TBA
Art Conference at AU’s Katzen Arts Center - As the culminating event of the project, there will be a one-day citywide art conference held in the new Katzen Arts Center at American University. Presenters for this conference will be selected from among the teacher participants. Presenters will present the results of the scholarly research they did to complete their art courses, the results of their action research projects, issues related to the lesson plans they developed, and their experiences using the lesson plans in the classroom. The art educators will also have an opportunity to exhibit the art works they completed during their art classes and the works of their students.
