Foreign Policy of Azerbaijan

Course Objectives and Topics:

The course focuses on two subjects:

1. History of Azerbaijani foreign policy, including foreign policy of Azerbaijani states throughout history; an inquiry into diplomatic activity of the heads of those states; organization of their foreign policy mechanisms; relations of Azerbaijan with other regional states.

2. Contemporary foreign policy of Azerbaijan – offers a study of the foreign policy of Azerbaijan after the collapse of the USSR from 1991 till present. Includes foreign policy making and regional and international policy priorities.

How contribute to Caucasus Studies program:

 

The course introduces the student of Caucasus Studies to foreign policy of the largest nation in the region. It examines the historical background, regional environment, priorities, and mechanisms, which shape and affect foreign policy making in Azerbaijan.

Reviews issues of regional security and co-operation in Caucasus.

Azerbaijani Emigration

Study of the causes and dynamics of migrations after the division of Azerbaijan into two parts by Russia and Persia in 1813 and 1828, features of migrations in 1813-1900, 1908-1918, 1920-1991. Organizations and press of Azerbaijani emigrants. Ideological, political, and historical heritage of Azerbaijani emigrants.

How contribute to Caucasus Studies program:

 

Azerbaijanis by far constitute the largest ethnic group in Caucasus and reside not only in Azerbaijan but also all over the Caucasus region. This course intends to provide comprehensive ethnopolitical study of this group.

Course Title:

Azerbaijani-Armenian Conflict

The course focuses on past and present of this conflict.

 

Historical background of the conflict in the 1918-1920's; territorial disputes over Garabagh, Zangazur and Nakhchivan. Escalation of conflict in 1988: Armenian territorial claims; separatist movement in Mountainous Garabagh after 1988; external factors in the conflict; mediation of international organizations. Possible ways of resolving the conflict by diplomatic means.

This course studies a fundamental branch of law – Constitutional Law, using methods of comparative analysis.

 

Theory, law and practice of the Constitution, including legislative, executive and judicial institutions in various countries, as well as constitutional law notions such as the rule of law, constitutional amendment, and fundamental rights and freedoms; analysis in comparative perspectives of organization of governments, their functioning, legal freedom of social organizations and individuals on the basis of the constitutional systems of various countries.

International Trade Law

This course introduces students to the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sales of Goods and how its provisions address the obligation of the buyer and the seller, contract formation, remedies for breach of the agreement, which party bears the risk of loss during shipment, and problems that may arise such as misdelivery, forged bills of lading, and misdescription of the goods; the financing of international trading of goods; various types of letters of credits, the role of each party and the remedies available when transactions are not completed as intended.
