Thi came to American University in 1992 as the Director of Judicial Affairs and Mediation Services and in 1995 joined the Office of General Counsel. Prior to coming to the University, she was a Legal Consultant for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees counseling asylum-seekers and providing legal advise to the governments of Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Thi focuses on discrimination, employment law, faculty relations, telecommunications, privacy, student-related matters, and admissions and financial aid.
