This exercise will introduce you to double-key encryption, which is discussed in the readings on privacy.
To install PGP:
Download PGP using the link on the course website. Follow the instructions on subsequent webpages to download the appropriate version for your computer. When you get the dialog box asking where to save the file, save it on your desktop.
When the download is complete, double-click on the PGP icon (on your desktop) to begin installation. You will need an unzip utility such as WinZip.
You will be asked if you have an existing keyring. Answer "No," and follow the instructions for creating a new key for yourself. After you have created your key, post it on a public server using the "server" menu.
When the installation is complete, restart your computer. You should see a new PGP icon in the tray at the lower right of your desktop. Click on the icon and choose "PGPTools."
From the PGP taskbar, choose "Keys." This opens your keyring. On the menu bar, choose "Servers," then "Search."
Search for my public key by entering "Golash" in the search box. Highlight my key, right click on it, and choose "Import to Keyring."
You are now ready to send and receive encrypted email. Open your normal email application and address an email to me at dgolash@american.edu. Type out your message as you normally would.
When you have finished typing the message, click on the PGP icon in your tray and choose "Current window" and then "encrypt" from the menu. (Make sure your email window is still the current window.)
You will get a dialog box with your keyring in the top. This is where you select the people who will be able to read your encrypted message. Select your own name and mine, and drag the keys to the lower window. Click "OK" and your message will be encrypted.
