This chapter discusses
many key issues for developing countries are quite different than
those of their developed counterparts. Three cases illustrate
this: wood trade and environmental protection in Malaysia, hazardous
waste imports into Nigeria, and the decline of Bali due to excessive
tourism. The guest is Bernard Hoekman of the World Bank who discusses
some of the particular problems developing countries face in the
effort to compete in the international trading system. The case
describes the trade in art, with a particular focus on Haitian
art, and the cultural and economic issues
related to it.
