Local Government Official Paper

The purpose of this short paper is to learn more about the functions of one particular local elected office and the current occupant of that office.

Select the local office and official by Thursday, October 9. Make sure that the office is local, rather than state or federal, and that the official is elected, not appointed. (Note that state legislators are state, not local, officials) Feel free to select an office and official from any county or city in the country. It will probably help, however, if you can contact your official before the paper is due. County, city and school board officials are all fine for this paper. Your county election board and the state election commission can help you find out what officials are elected in your area. The South Carolina State Election Commission is located at 2221 Devine Street near Five Points. The Richland County Board of Elections is located at 2020 Hampton Street.

Your paper should attempt to accomplish two major goals in a concise fashion:

Note that the purpose of the paper is not to assess or to review the performance of the official, but to learn more about the office and its occupant.

The paper should be approximately 1 ½ - 2 typed double-spaced pages. The paper should be turned in at the beginning of class on Tuesday, October 21.
