The following data sets are available for download for no charge. All of the following data sets are .ZIP files. After unzipping them, each contains at least two files, the data set (in ASCII or comma separate format) and a README.txt or .asc file. If you have encounter any problems, please contact me at dlublin@american.edu.
Palm Beach County Election Data (28 KB). This .zip file consists of two readme files (pb92.txt and pb96.txt) and two additional files (pb92.csv and pb96.csv) containing 1992 and 1996 election data from Palm Beach County matched with registration data broken down by race and party. The data sets do not include overvotes and undervotes. They most likely also does not include absentee votes unless the county allocated the votes to precincts. The 1992 data set includes presidential and congressional results. The 1996 data set includes presidential and senatorial results. Candidate Quality and U.S. Senate Election Data (18 KB). This data set contains all the data necessary to replicate the results from my article, "Quality, Not Quantity: Strategic Politicians in U.S. Senate Elections, 1952-1990," Journal of Politics, Vol. 56, No. 1 (February 1994). Congressional District Demographic and Political Data (863 KB). This data set contains all the data necessary to replicate the results from my book, The Paradox of Representation: Racial Gerrymandering and Minority Interests in Congress (Princeton University Press 1997). One could also replicate the results from "The Election of African Americans and Latinos to the U.S. House of Representatives, 1972-1994" American Politics Quarterly (July 1997). More generally, this data set contains demographic and political data for congressional districts utilized from 1962 through 1994.
