Mehreen Farooq

Research Assistant

Mehreen Farooq is a Research Assistant at the Center for Democracy and Election Management (CDEM), and a M.A. candidate at the School of International Service (SIS) at American University, focusing on the political development of the Middle East. While at CDEM, she conducted a research project on the implementation of gender quotas in Sudan.While pursuing her Masters, Mehreen has served on the editorial board for the school's Journal of International Service. In addition, she served as the Campus Coordinator for the Project on Middle East Democracy (POMED), a non-profit organization dedicated to examining how democracies can develop in the Middle East with US assistance. Prior to working at CDEM, Mehreen was a Research Assistant to Dr. Marvin Weinbaum, the Scholar in Residence on Afghanistan and Pakistan at the Middle East Institute. She is fluent in Urdu and is learning Arabic. In 2007 Mehreen was selected as a Fulbright scholar to research the future of opposition parties in Egypt. Her publications include "Black Voters, Black Candidates, and Social Issues: Does Party Identification Matter?" Social Science Quarterly, March 2007. Mehreen received her BA in Political Science and Leadership from Christopher Newport University.
