SIS Welcomes Professor Raúl Benítez and
Diplomat Daniel Hernández

SIS AND THE CENTER FOR North American Studies (CNAS) have collaborated to bring Dr. Raúl Benítez to AU from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) for the 2006–07 academic year. Dr. Benítez will be a visiting professor in SIS and a CNAS senior fellow. He has spent previous semesters in Washington, D.C. as a visiting scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and National Defense University.
This fall, Professor Benítez will teach an SIS course, “North American Security Issues,” and lead one of the CNAS faculty seminars on this same subject. During the spring 2007 semester, he will teach another SIS course, “Latin American International Relations.” The author of numerous books, including Mexico and the New Challenges of Hemispheric Security (2004), Dr. Benítez received his PhD from UNAM, where he has taught since 1991.

SIS and CNAS have also worked together to bring Daniel Hernández, the consul of Mexico in Laredo, Texas, to AU. Mr. Hernández will occupy the Mexican diplomat in residence position in SIS for the 2006–07 academic year. The position was established in 2005 with funding from the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Relations and CEMEX, the Mexico-based global
cement company.
Mr. Hernández will also be a CNAS senior fellow, conducting research on U.S., Canadian, and Mexican border policies, teaching a course, and leading one of the CNAS faculty seminars. He earned his MA from the University of Texas at Austin and held several other positions within the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Relations before becoming consul in 1999.
