AFTER EARNING AU’S FACULTY Member of the Year Award in 2004–05, Professor Sarah Menke-Fish (SOC/MA ’92) spent the spring 2006 semester as a visiting professor at Tec de Monterrey (ITESM). There she was evaluated by the students as the best professor in the Communication and Journalism department. “This was quite a surprise and honor,” she said.

While Professor Menke-Fish taught in Monterrey, ITESM’s Dr. Daniel Cabrera taught at AU as part of the first faculty exchange between the two universities. Their respective “Video Production” classes met via video conference numerous times to produce two joint documentaries. Menke-Fish also taught a “Television Studio and Production” course. The students’ semester-long project was to create and produce in Spanish 20 episodes of an educational game show called “Click.” This fall, the shows will air on ATV, the university’s student-run television station, and also serve as a teaching tool for both Spanish and communication courses at AU.

Reflecting on why she pursued an opportunity to teach at Tec, Menke-Fish commented on “the wonderful faculty, incredible students, and international scope of its communication program.” The undergraduates in her classes hailed from Mexico as well as Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, Spain, and the United States. Class discussions similarly spanned the globe.

Menke-Fish also met several times with AU undergraduates who were studying abroad at Tec last spring. Back on AU’s campus this year, she looks forward to meeting with and encouraging many students to study at ITESM, which has developed into one of AU’s strategic partners.
