New International Trade Law Society Led by Matt Simpson (WCL/SIS MA ’08)
IN THE FALL OF 2005, while most of his first-year WCL classmates found little time for anything but homework, Matt Simpson established the International Trade Law Society. As the Society’s president, Simpson organized five well-attended forums on regional free trade agreements, including two separate events on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). One of the NAFTA forums featured Robert Herzstein, former lead counsel to Mexico in the NAFTA negotiations, as well as Dr. Robert Pastor, director of AU’s Center for North American Studies (CNAS) and advisor to the U.S. NAFTA negotiating team.
Simpson chose WCL due to its high ranking among international law programs, and he enrolled in the WCL/SIS dual degree program in order to combine legal studies with policy work. From Toronto, Simpson was also pleased to find a university where North American Studies is emphasized. This summer, he conducted research for CNAS on what a North American legal system might look like. His work will provide the background for organizing a conference on the subject at AU in the next year.
Through a future job in international trade law, Simpson wishes to represent Canadian interests and expand the benefits of NAFTA. Given what he has accomplished at WCL so far, Simpson seems to be preparing himself well.
