Women & Politics Institute Hosts Delegation from Russia

LAST DECEMBER, EIGHT RUSSIAN WOMEN came to SPA's Women & Politics Institute for a week-long training
program through the Open World Leadership Center, housed in the Library of Congress. As finance directors and advisors at various Russian corporations, they received training in political, business, and legal skills.

"This program was a tremendous success," said Karen Defilippi, program director at the Institute. "It was our 13th delegation and with each one we improve the program content and increase the dialogue between women leaders in the United States and Russia." The group met with American women in the fields of journalism, real estate, business, and radio production. This program included a Congressional briefing, where delegates "shared with American policymakers and business professionals the challenges and obstacles to sustaining and rebuilding business after widespread political change such as perestroika and the 1998 stock market crash," Defilippi explained. The delegation also met with Dr. Karen O'Connor, director of the Women & Politics Institute.

The Open World Leadership Center was established in 1999 to enable emerging leaders from Russia and other Eurasian nations to experience first-hand American democracy and civil society.
