Kenya has a considerable number of training centers offering courses on applications software as well as on basic computer skills such as programming techniques and systems analysis. Computer education and training is offered at tertiary level. It has the highest number of university and college educated English speaking professionals in East Africa.
Most Kenyan universities offer degree courses in IT and various colleges, technical and management training institutions offer diploma courses. These universities include: Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, United States International University, Nazarene University and Catholic University. Therefore, Kenya has skilled personnel in the IT profession, including computer programmers, software developers, hardware maintenance engineers, systems analysts, and IT consultants.
About two hundred teachers completed information technology courses last year at the African Virtual University based at Kenyatta University. IT knowledge offers teachers an opportunity to do research and access information that is not easily available.
The Kenya Government has also started training its own staff on IT related subjects and proposes mainstreaming of IT training within all schools, colleges and universities.
