Overview - Transportation, Communications and Technology Industry

BTC Headquarters

Botswana has a relatively small technology industry with less than 500 registered companies(10). The complement of companies however covers a range of different areas including hardware and software sales, maintenance and development, database and collaboration application setup and maintenance, multimedia, desktop publishing, public bulletins and forums and electronic commerce. While the industry is small, the level of government investment in core infrastructure has been very promising and the industry is expected to grow rapidly in the near future.

There is one state owned telecoms company in Botswana, the Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC), and an independent regulatory authority, the Botswana Telecommunications Authority. There are two cellular operators, MASCOM, the market leader and Vista.

The BTA is responsible for issuing spectrum and licenses for data and voice transmission using various technologies(19). The agency is a leading pro-technology entity that allows the download of most application forms from its website. It works closely with the BTC and other telecommuncations and technology companies to solicit and develop policies that benefit the overall population and are well aligned with the overall goals of the government.
