ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Overview

Jamaica has made rapid strides to catch up to other countries with regard to providing shopping and bill paying online.  There are about 37 e-commerce sites that Jamaica offers.  There are also sites where you can pay your utility and phone bills online.  This site is called Paymaster.  A favorite site for most Jamaicans and foreigners is Go-Jamaica.  The sites are easy to navigate your way through.  Although in many terms Jamaica is considered an underdeveloped country, I would say in the next five to ten years Jamaica will be a hotbed for e-commerce technology.  With Jamaica’s sun and fun companies will eventually base their operations in the Caribbean.

Most Used E-Commerce Sites

Overview

Many of the sites have web portals that can lead to other e-commerce shopping spots.  There are also a lot of virtual malls where a shopper can buy just about anything in regards to Jamaica.  The Websites take credit cards; it does not go into details what other forms of payments they take.  However it does seem that they use some other form of payment like (PayPal) that is being used in the United States.  This system is call PayoutOnline. Online payments have reduced the time and cost needed to make payments from weeks or days to hours or minutes. Despite these developments, most international payments from Jamaica are effected through paper checks, or by expensive wire transfers. PayOut Corporation was formed in October 2001 to provide international online payment services to Jamaicans. In partnership with Jamaica National Building Society, PayOutOnline now offers Jamaicans the ability to send money or make payments worldwide easily, economically and securely. Payments are initiated online simply by selecting “Make Payment" and completing the payment form. You then send the printed payment confirmation with your check to the nearest Jamaica National Building Society branch location. The payment will be executed as soon as the confirmation and funds are received. It's that easy!
