Australia has the potential to be an attractive and residential destination of information technology professionals given its strategic competitive advantage in the Asia/Pacific region of lifestyle which is characterized by an affordable, clean and safe environment and community well-being. These advantages in conjunction with an affordable and competitive National Information Infrastructure, provide Australia with the potential to become established as the Silicon Valley of the Asia/Pacific region. Australia also has the potential to be established as an internationally recognized "sophisticated community test bed" for the design, development and commercialization of innovative information technology products and services. For example, the Cooperative Research Centers in Australia brings together industry participants, universities and the government to collaborate on information technology research projects. Some projects include the following:
· Sensor Signal and Information Processing: Initial research projects include sensor signal and information processing in Radar, Multisensor Fusion, Visual Processing and Fundamental Technologies.
· Research Data Network: Research is focused on the following projects: developing and testing technology that supports commercial and public multimedia information services available on broadband networks; and developing technologies for seamless access to the management of globally distributed heterogeneous information services to foster research collaboration and commercial competitiveness.
Another research center includes the Center for Advanced Technologies for Telecommunications that does research in teletraffic engineering, computer aided software engineering, digital signal processing, and integrated optics.
