Privatization and Deregulation

All segments of the telecommunication sector in Iran are government owned. Thus, the government maintains a monopoly.

Privatization has generally been welcomed and is one of the objectives under the Second Five Year Development Plan. Involvement by the private sector is limited to mobile phones and small rural exchanges of up to 2,000 lines. However, compatibility of the systems is a major issue to be considered.

The prices have started to gradually reflect comparable international market prices. However, there is no quality control.
