Informal Essay #1

For this essay, you will write the next chapter in Einstein's Dreams. This will be your twist on how time might be. Try to keep the setting and tone of the text. If those don't work for your own notion of time, work with what does. Whatever you decide to do, keep in mind the purposes of this assignment: to open up your minds (at least a little) and to start looking skeptically at what we take for granted.

Informal Essay #2

In "Brain Basics," the Caine and Caine write: "The key is to appreciate the interconnectedness of all the facets and to grasp the fact that learning is a product of everything that we are" (p. 39). What are they referring to? What do they mean? Explore their ideas and make them your own. Be specific, be thorough, refer to the text, and include a "reference" page.

Informal Essay #3

According to Armstrong, in 7 Kinds of Smart, each intelligence Gardner has chosen to include as one of the multiple intelligences demonstrates certain characteristics that bolster his theory. What are these characteristics and how do they bolster his theory?

NB: By now your informal essays should be reaching new levels. They should all have thesis statements, clear organizational schemes, support assertions with supporting details, and demonstrate grammatical clarity and accuracy .(2/23/99)

Informal Essay #4

Find a world wide web page that relates to your subject. There seems to be a web page for everything these days. Your job is to find a VALID and RELIABLE web page. Does the page include facts that you've verified in other sources? How does it present the information? Where is the source located -- is it on a reliable server? For help evaluating pages, check the Research Station at http://writing.msu.edu/station (choose the "Web Evaluation" link). Once you've found your page, think about how it differs from other sources that you've found. How is the information well-suited for a web page? Would it work just as well in a book? What makes the page valuable to your project (or why isn't it valuable)?

Informal Essay #5

Rewrite any one of your previous informal essays using the techniques discussed in class to improve its clarity, conciseness and accuracy and without using any version of the verb "to be." Note: Turn this paper in to the vertical file in Gray Hall 227 by 12:00 noon, Friday 12 March 1999

Informal Essay #7

Your first challenge is to memorize the following list of food additives that have been outlawed:

 Name Year Use
Cobalt sulfate  1966  Beer foam stabilizer
 Cyclamate  1970  Artificial sweetener
 Dulcin  1950  Artificial sweetener
Green No. 1  1966  Coloring agent
 Orange B  1978  Coloring agent
Red No. 2  1976  Coloring agent
 Safrole  1960  Root beer flavoring
Violet No. 1  1973  Coloring agent

You need only memorize the name; the other information may be helpful to you. Once you have memorized this list, write about the process of doing so. What, if any, methods or strategies did you use? Were you successful? If so, why? If not, what could you have done to increase the likelihood of your success?

NOTE: This essay is due Friday, April 9.

Informal Essay #8

Last week, we drew models of how we thought our own memory systems functioned. Take your model-revise or redo it if you want-and write the narrative explaining how it works. It may be helpful for you to reread "The Forgotten Memory Systems," by Caine and Caine. Turn in the model with your essay.

Informal Essay #9

Today in class, we discussed the occupational description of a CEO and the comparable requirements of a freshman's brain. Your task with this essay is to write the occupational description of your brain. Use as many as the action verbs as appropriate from the list distributed in class and be as thorough as possible.
