Berlin on Screen: Shadows of a Lost Metropolis
Slide Lecture with Dietrich Neumann, Professor of Art and Architectural History atBrown University

Berlin's appearance before its wartime devastation is best preserved in motion pictures, which preserved on screen a city that no longer exists. During the 1920s and 1930s, movies captured the intimate streetscapes and gracious boulevards later flattened by bombing. More recent films portray the city's postwar devastation and division by the Berlin Wall. Dietrich Neumann will consider Berlin's urban form through the cinema using slides and film footage.
