Short Biography
Nanette S. Levinson is Associate Professor of International Relations
and Director (as of Fall 2008) of the International Communication Division
in the School of International Service, American University, Washington,
D.C. In January 2008, she was elected Chair of the Global Internet
Governance Scholars Academic Network, GigaNet; she also serves as
past Chair of the International communications Section, and current Chair
of the International Communication Section, International Studies
Association and its Compendium Project Section Editor. During March
2007, she was a Visiting Professor, Fondation Nationale des Sciences
Politiques-L'Institut d'études politiques (IEP) de Paris. She is also on the
Board of the Information Technology and Politics Section of the American
Political Science Association.
Recipient of awards including those for outstanding teaching,
program development, academic affairs administration, multicultural
affairs and honors programming, she has designed co-curricular
collaborative learning opportunities including the Freshman Service
Experience and the Graduate Portal Program.
Having served as Chair (and the first woman elected to this position) of
the Board of the National Conference on the Advancement of Research,
as Secretary-General of the Transatlantic Informational Exchange
Services, and as a Board Member of the Women's Foreign Policy Group
(where she co- authored a report on women leaders), Prof. Levinson has
a special interest in leadership and in social entrepreneurship studies in
international affairs.
Her recent research includes a project with colleagues at the University
of Paris I on innovation and cross-national strategic alliances and a
project with an SIS graduate student on technology and grassroots
development involving both local and international organizations.
Currently, she is examining internet governance, institutional change, and
interorganizational learning; cross-national, virtual teamwork; and
international cyberinfrastructure policy with a focus on development.
Prof. Levinson's writings appear online and in journals ranging from
Organizational Dynamics to I nternational Studies Perspectives.
She served as Associate Dean of the School of International Service from
1988-2005 and received her Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral Degrees
from Harvard University. A lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox,
she also cheers for France’s Les Bleus and for Japan's Hanshin Tigers.
Occasionally, she can be found, together with colleagues and students,
at nearby Camden Yards or RFK Stadium.
