Alumni Open Homes to Incoming Freshmen for Another Spectacular Summer Send-off Season

This summer, alumni and parents of current and former students will greet the Class of 2008 as they prepare to enter the American University community. The office of Admissions worked diligently throughout the year to identify and recruit volunteers to sponsor receptions for students that have accepted admission to the university. This year’s receptions will be in Chicago, Cleveland, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Pittsburgh, Seattle, St. Louis, Woodbury (NJ), and other cities throughout the country.

“We are so thankful to the alumni and parents who made the commitment to sponsor a reception. By taking on the costs of these receptions, they are making a contribution that truly benefits the future of the university,” says Anne Singer, assistant director of Admissions.

While the send-offs range from ice cream socials to backyard picnics, the main goal is to get new students acquainted with one another and to have alumni answer any questions the new students or their parents may have.

“These events are a great way for alumni to make connections with a new generation of AU students. The students value the relationships they create with both the alumni and their fellow classmates,” adds Singer.

Those who sponsor the receptions feel it’s an important introduction to the AU community.

“My wife Denise and I thoroughly enjoy welcoming new students and their parents into the American University family. We try to eliminate the anxiety the students and parents are feeling. Denise has documented any possible concern, paired it with a solution, and she shares the results with the parents and students at the reception,” said Al Nicolosi, parent of Nicole Nicolosi, CAS/BA ’04.
