January 2005
It seemed only natural when we were planning last month for this January newsletter that the opening message would focus on new beginnings for the new year. Who could have imagined the twist that idea would take in light of the tsunami news that’s come to pass?
We count hundreds of AU alumni in Thailand, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka – not to mention the many current students and faculty who come from the affected nations, were there when it happened, or have family there.
As members of the global AU community in which we take such pride, I hope you’ll join me in wishing the very best to those in our AU family who were affected by this international tragedy. I also hope you’ll use this disaster as inspiration to make a difference in 2005. Several AU groups involved with providing aid are described in this issue, and
I hope you find at least one to which you’d like to contribute.
All the best-
-Melissa Reichley
Editor, Alumni Update
P.S. Kudos to the many alumni who work for the Red Cross, USAID, the World Health Organization, and other groups whose work has been highlighted by this tragedy. You live the ideals we hope are passed to current AU students!
