Zipcars Hit AU, Easing Lives of Those Without Cars

Zipcar LogoComing back to the D.C. area to visit AU or unsure which rental car company to go with? AU's Auxiliary Services is making your life easier one Zipcar at a time.

AU brought the company to campus in April 2004 and has since added car locations on the main and Tenley campuses, at Park Bethesda, the Berkshire apartments, Glover Park, and outside the Tenleytown Metro stop. Auxiliary Services brought Zipcar to AU "to promote mass transportation as a service to students," says JoDe Nowland, director of Auxiliary Services.

Since Zipcars were brought to AU, nearly 200 faculty, staff, and students have used the service. In order to use a Zipcar, you must first have a membership, which can cost $50 or more per year, including the plan and application fee. Those affiliated with AU, including alumni, are entitled to a flat annual rate of $25 and a $10 credit that can be used during the first 45 days of each year of membership. You're still charged the hourly or day rate in addition to membership fees, though.

Zipcars - which include MINIs, Volkswagens, hybrids, and other makes and models - can be rented by the hour (from $8.50) or by the day (from $59) for rates that include gas, insurance, maintenance, designated parking, and XM satellite radio. Exclusive Zipcar parking spots are located throughout the D.C. area, including nine locations on or nearby AU’s main and Tenleytown campuses.

It’s simple. Take the Metro to Tenleytown (or more than 40 other Metro stops), unlock a Zipcar, and be on your way with guaranteed parking at various locations throughout the D.C. area.
