French Alumni Gather for Reception with U.S. Ambassador

AU alumni and friends living in France came together on June 8 for the annual cocktail reception at the residence of the U.S. Ambassador to France, Craig Stapleton. Sponsored by the member schools of the American University Clubs of France (AUC France), the event was organized by the alumni clubs of Princeton, Thunderbird-Garvin School of International Management, University of Texas at Austin, and Yale. The reception, a tradition for more than 10 years, provides an opportunity for the American ambassador to welcome U.S. alumni clubs to the ambassador's residence.

“The AUC France cocktail reception is always a great occasion to network with other AU alumni living in Paris,” says Ron Oman, SIS/MA ’02, president of AU’s Paris alumni chapter and organizer of this event in 2005. “This year, we mingled with Ambassador Stapleton and alumni from more than 35 American schools in the beautiful surroundings of the ambassador’s official residence.”

More than 280 alumni attended from all of the AUC France member schools. Champagne and hors d’oeuvres were served in the residence, followed by a stroll through the gardens, and brief remarks from the AUC France president, the event organizer, and Ambassador Stapleton himself. The ambassador spoke of the importance of educational exchange between France and the United States.

"It was a great privilege to be at this wonderful place with the U.S. Ambassador to France,” says Edouard P. Gueudet, WCL/LLM ’02, former Paris chapter leader. "I hope that the AU community in France attends this kind of event more often, as it is sure to inspire enthusiasm and involvement in all of our alumni."

Past chapter activities have included events ranging from a Thanksgiving dinner hosted by U.S. Ambassador Howard Leach, to happy hour gatherings, formal alumni receptions, and a breakfast reception featuring former Congressperson Connie Morella, CAS/MA ’67. “AU is truly international and the chapter’s goal is to keep promoting the school’s image outside the U.S.," says Gueudet.
