Back to Bender for Basketball: New Season Ticket Plan for Young Alumni

With the 2006-2007 AU basketball season just a few weeks away, the Athletics office is offering ticket plans to meet the needs of most anyone. In particular, Athletics has paired with the Young Alumni Chapter (YAC) to provide a new young alumni season ticket plan, as well as special events designed specifically for AU’s younger alums. The plan includes tickets to all men’s and women’s home basketball games in a new reserved endzone seating area designated for young alumni. At just $60, the plan is more than half off the regular season ticket price of $125. As an added bonus, young alumni ticket plan purchasers will also receive a year-round pass to all ticketed athletics home games, including volleyball, men’s soccer, and wrestling, a subscription to AU Athletics online newsletter, and the annual AU Athletics wall calendar.

To complement the ticket plan, YAC and AU Athletics will cosponsor pre-game receptions at two home games (Monday, November 20 and Saturday, February 3), as well as a “Brunch with the Coaches” event on Sunday, January 21. The brunch will be an opportunity for young alumni to ask questions of men’s and women’s basketball coaches, Jeff Jones and Melissa McFerrin, respectively, in an open-forum style. Although young alumni are encouraged to take advantage of the season ticket plan, both the receptions and the brunch will be open to all young alumni (those who graduated within the last 10 years).

YAC provides programming for AU alumni living in the Washington D.C. metro area who graduated within the last 10 years. Since this group numbers approximately 5,000 individuals, it made sense for AU Athletics to target them with special ticket deals, especially since sports at the university have experienced such growth in recent years. Jeff Jones says, “The enthusiasm for our program continues to grow, and the students of the last 10 years, now young alums, have been a huge part of that.”

AU Athletics aims to nurture that enthusiasm with the ticket plan and special events that will hopefully not only boost game attendance, but also help alumni reconnect with each other and the university. David Bierwirth, associate director of athletics, notes, “The initial feedback has been great as we expect the games to become an entertaining way for young alumni to see old friends and network, while cheering on their alma mater.”
