Bender LibraryAlumni Granted Free Access to Explore Library's Research Database

Looking for a one-stop source for your post-graduation research needs? Look no further! AU's Bender Library now provides access to a comprehensive database specifically designed for the research needs of the post-college professional.

In response to frequent requests from graduating students and alumni over the years, the Library and the Office of Alumni Programs have partnered to provide access to the Academic Search Alumni Edition database, a top-of-the-line research tool for today's AU graduate, with some of the strongest content awareness and search skills on record.

Containing more than 3,600 peer-reviewed, full-text journals, as well as indices and abstracts for nearly 10,000 publications, the database offers information in nearly every area of academic study, including: anthropology, art, biology, business, history, international studies, physics, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, and more.

The database is available to those who have received degrees from American University and can be accessed through AU's online inCircle community - an alumni portal that makes it easy to meet and network with alumni in your area, announce events, share photos, and much more.

The majority of nationally ranked schools do not offer a benefit of this nature. "We felt it was important to offer AU grads this extremely useful resource at no cost," says Director of Alumni Programs Vanessa Yost. "Feedback from alumni reiterated this desire, and now we're very happy to be one of a small number of fine academic institutions to provide it."

The staff of the university library, whose efforts were instrumental in making this new benefit move from the "wish list" to reality, are equally pleased. "The Academic Search Alumni Edition extends library services for alumni beyond the current book borrowing program," says Serials and Electronic Resources Librarian Claire Dygert. "Now, alumni have 24/7 access to thousands of full-text journals from their desktop, from anywhere around the world with an Internet connection. The library is thrilled for this opportunity to support the information needs of AU students beyond graduation." Dygert sites acting librarian Diana Vogelsong, CAS/MA '81, as another major contributor in helping bring this benefit from the drawing board to fruition.
