“Faculty on the Road” Series Kicks Off in NYC
AU’s new “Faculty on the Road” series launched last month with an event that garnered a welcome reception from those in attendance. On November 14, student-favorite SOC Professor Leonard Steinhorn spoke to a crowd in New York City’s Rumford Hall at the Midtown Executive Club. The topic: The 2008 presidential election. What was originally intended to be a 25-minute discussion ballooned into an hour-and-a-half long analysis of all issues and individuals having to do with the 2008 presidential race. Steinhorn, who teaches courses on subjects ranging from political communication to media studies and wrote the widely discussed 2006 book, The Greater Generation: In Defense of the Baby Boom Legacy, as well as numerous writings that have appeared in publications such as the Washington Post and Salon.com, opted not to focus on any single issue or candidate. Instead, he offered broad insight into the campaign itself. “The event was superb,” said E.J. Stern, SOC/BA ’04, New York chapter leader. As a result, some alumni have already expressed interest in getting involved to help plan future events. Stern says planners of “Faculty on the Road” hope to foster even more alumni engagement. The series has been in the works since June 2007, and the event is “designed to facilitate greater and deeper faculty-alumni interaction through intellectual engagement outside the classroom.” At each lecture, “university faculty will meet and speak with alumni about current research projects and/or lead discussions in their field of interest.” The New York City event was just the first among many that promise to be equally as engaging and informative.
