Jacobs Fitness CenterGet in Shape in 2007 at the Jacobs Fitness Center

Are you one of the many who resolved to get in shape in 2007? AU can help! Begin the new year by making your health a priority and building more activity into your life at the Jacobs Fitness Center.

Not just for students, faculty, and staff, the Jacobs Fitness Center offers alumni a discounted annual membership, the latest in exercise equipment and entertainment systems, and help in getting an exercise program started.

There are plenty of workout options to choose from with 10 treadmills, 12 elliptical machines, nine exercise bikes, five step machines, three ergs... and 14 televisions to keep you entertained and help you work out longer. If weightlifting is more your style, JFC carries 19,890 pounds of weights. That's equivalent to four Hummers or seven and a half Honda Civics, says Roger Moffat, director of Recreational Sports and Fitness. "Fortunately, proper strength training does not require lifting all that weight on the same day," he jokes.

William I JacobsCompleted in 1998, the state-of-the-art Fitness Center provides AU students, faculty, staff, and alumni the opportunity to work out on the latest cardio and strength-training equipment, swim laps in the pools, play pick-up basketball, or enjoy the outdoor tennis courts and track. In addition, fitness assessments, personal training sessions, and a variety of group exercise classes such as step aerobics, kick boxing, and yoga are offered for an additional nominal fee. Currently, about 75 alumni and their families are members.

The facility was made possible by a generous donation from William I Jacobs, KSB/BS ’63, WCL/JD ’66, former chair of the AU Board of Trustees (pictured).

Annual membership for alumni is only $480 per person, or $985 for the entire family. Now through February 15, 2007, the Fitness Center is offering a one-time discount of 5 percent off for new alumni memberships. For more information, visit www.american.edu/recfit. To arrange a tour or initiate this discount, contact Roger Moffat at 202-885-6048.
