Seniors Choose Class of 2007 Gift as Legacy

More than 200 seniors took time out from studying for finals to help celebrate the selection of their Senior Class Gift at Chef Geoff’s last month. On Thursday, Dec. 9, amidst appetizers and drinks, the Senior Class Gift Committee announced the tight race resulted with the majority of seniors selecting two gifts, the Class of 2007 Endowment, and the “Park & Park.”

“We had a great turnout for voting, which is truly an indicator of our class’ commitment to AU,” says Meghan Mahoney, chair of the Senior Class Gift Committee. The voting was done electronically, via the student portal at my.american.edu from Nov. 27-29, 2006.

The Park & Park will be an outdoor area combining picnic tables with a stationary bike parking area for commuter students. It will serve not only as a functional space for commuters, but also as a place for socializing, eating, and studying for all AU students.

The Class of 2007 Endowment will be a permanent fund invested by the university so its growth can generate future income to support the endowment’s purpose. The senior class is currently in the process of deciding whether they want its purpose to be a scholarship or a green fund, but either will make a great impact on the lives of future AU students.

“We’re all really excited about the gift selection. We definitely have our work cut out for us, but I’m confident the class will successfully raise enough money to execute these gifts,” says Mark Stern, senior class president.

The class will need to raise more than $60,000 to make their legacy become a reality. To help support the Class of 2007 in their efforts, please visit http://giving.american.edu and choose “Senior Class Gift” under Area of Benefit.
