May 2007

As I write, AU is preparing for another Mother’s Day commencement. The excitement and angst of realizing that graduation is imminent, and the anticipation of summer vacations and future plans are truly palpable.

Amidst all the hopes and promise of this year’s graduating class, however, the recent tragedy at Virginia Tech looms real. For a time last month, we were all Hokies. All of us, AU alumni and the entire university community, joined Virginia Tech in their grief, their outrage, and their sorrow. Today we continue to join them in their renewal and their hope.

As we applaud our senior class and welcome them into the world of proud AU alumni, let’s remember Virginia Tech, too. This year, we realize just how lucky we are to have this new beginning.

And as we look ahead to new beginnings ourselves, the search for a new AU president continues. The Board of Trustees sent a note early this month informing the entire AU community that the Search Committee continues with its deliberative work of finding our next president. While the process won’t be completed this month as had been originally hoped, it does sound as though things are moving along! You can find the latest info on the Presidential Search at http://www.american.edu/presidential_search

Sincerely,

Brian F. Keane, SPA/BA '89

There continue to be a variety of ways to get involved in all our alumni groups! E-mail me and let’s talk!
