by Hilary Schwab Twenty-five years ago, Pam Nadell graduated from Ohio State University with a doctorate in history, completed one job interview, and accepted the position of American University professor. She has taught here ever since. Nadell has been director of the Jewish Studies program since 1994 and teaches courses like Modern Jewish Civilization, American Jewish History, and History of the Holocaust. Nadell knew her commitment to teaching and learning reached an all-time high when she was honored at the Faculty Recognition Dinner on April 29 as AU’s 2007-2008 Scholar/Teacher of the Year. “I feel very humble to be rewarded so generously and be so honored after 25 years,” says Nadell. “I feel like I’ve blinked and 25 years went past. It’s incredibly gratifying to be esteemed by one’s colleagues and peers. It shows you’ve done a good job.” This award recognizes Nadell as one of AU’s most exceptional scholars and professors, an honor she now shares with CAS Professor Anthony Riley (2001), SOC Professor Patricia Aufderheide (2004), and KSB Professor Edward Wasil, Jr. (2006), among others. “These are the colleagues I’ve always admired on campus, and to stand among them is an honor I just don’t have words to convey,” Nadell adds. One of her colleagues joked that once a professor wins this award, s/he forgets how to teach. Nadell hopes that doesn’t happen to her. She doesn’t want to change her teaching style just because she was awarded this honor. “I’m going to do what I’ve always done because that seems to work,” she says. Nadell’s favorite part of her job is interacting with her students. “The best thing about being able to teach is that we are constantly learning,” she says. “I’m always learning from the students. It’s thanks to them that I know about YouTube, and Facebook, and Matisyahu.” Six
other AU professors were also recognized with university faculty awards: | |||
