How often do students get to dress up in camouflage, run around the woods, and shoot each other with high-velocity paintballs, all in the name of philanthropy? Probably not often enough, but members of AU's Alpha Chi Omega sorority and Delta Chi fraternity joined forces on September 29 to do just that. The Play for Life annual event is geared to raise awareness and necessary funding for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, whose mission is to work toward a cure for blood cancers.

This annual philanthropic event is a tribute to Kimberly Miller, an AU senior and Alpha Chi Omega member who lost her battle with lymphoma in September 1997, and Jon Wolf, a leukemia survivor and Delta Chi brother. Each year, this event is dedicated to Kim, Jon, and all those courageous individuals battling leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood cancers. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

More than 120 fully prepped and loaded (with gear) participants met at Outdoor Adventures: Paintball Sports in Bowie, Md., and did battle, raising more than $4,600 in the process. Approximately half of both Greek organizations’ members were in attendance, along with other supporters.

“We had one of the best turnouts at Play for Life this year with more than 120 participants in attendance and wonderful sponsors such as Guapo’s Mexican Restaurant, Starbuck’s Coffee, andJetBlue Airlines,” says Alpha Chi Omega President Helen Nissan '08. “Regardless of the paintball bruises, everyone had a wonderful time ‘playing’ as a means to raise money for a very special cause!”

One of the event's organizers and a member of Alpha Chi Omega, Erin Rengel '08, encourages anyone with questions about the fund raiser to e-mail her.
