When was the last time you talked to your college roommate, or came back to campus and wandered around the quad, Mary Graydon Center, or the amphitheatre? Summer may have just started, but plans are already shaping up for Alumni Weekend this October, and now’s the time to start talking to your friends and motivating them to join you, to ensure you have the best Alumni Weekend ever. Whether you graduated in 1938 or 2008, come back to campus and reunite with your classmates – and gossip about everyone who lamed out and didn’t come (just checking to make sure you’re paying attention)! This year’s featured Saturday night event, “Port and Politics” will feature a cocktail reception on campus. Amidst the mingling, President Neil Kerwin, SPA/BA ’71, and Alumni Association President Brian Keane, SPA-SOC/BA ’87, will recognize this year’s Alumni Award winners... to be announced later this summer. Following the reception, stick around for a special Kennedy Political Union (KPU)-sponsored election season presentation from three former White House press secretaries (to be announced shortly once the contracts are finalized). Executive producer of NBC’s Meet the Press, Betsy Fischer, SPA/BA '92, SOC/MA '96, will be moderating what will surely prove to be an entertaining and intellectually stimulating end to a full day of campus activities. The always-popular AU Picnic will be held on Saturday, October 27. This is the perfect time to bring your favorite stories from the year(s), the kids (or at least pictures of them), and catch up with your friends over a delicious gourmet barbeque. With live music provided by Shwa, a band led by Joshua Losben, SIS/BA ’03 (www.shwamusic.com), and games for children, the picnic promises to remain a great family event. If you graduated in 1958 or earlier, Alumni Programs has a day of special events planned for you on Friday, October 24. The day will feature the Golden Eagle Luncheon, held on the stage of the Abramson Family Recital Hall in the beautiful Katzen Arts Center. Graduates from the Class of 1958, celebrating their 50th class reunion, will be honored as our newest Golden Eagles, and all attendees will enjoy a live student performance, as well as a special Golden Eagles group photo. Reunion celebrations will continue that evening, as the classes of 1983, 1988, 1998, and 2003 commemorate their special milestone reunions with private parties. These events will take place both on campus and across town. The Class of 1983 will rendezvous on campus at the President’s Office Building, Garden, and Patio to honor their 25th reunion; the Class of 1988 will celebrate their 20th reunion on the Katzen Arts Center’s Abramson Family Recital Hall Stage. Graduates from 1998 will enjoy a private party at Clyde’s in the happening Gallery Place-Chinatown area of the city, and the Class of 2003 will celebrate five years since crossing the stage with their diplomas at Ireland’s Four Fields (formerly known as the 4 Ps) in Cleveland Park. In addition to class reunions, many other groups will gather during the weekend, too.
These events are just a few of the highlights of Alumni Weekend 2008, which is being held in conjunction with Family Weekend for the third year in a row. More details will be announced later this summer. But don’t wait too long to organize your closest friends to come back. You can always visit campus, but class reunions only happen a few times in a lifetime! -Tara Sherwin |
