What is the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes?
The Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes is designed to assist students in successfully attaining their academic goals. The program supports Student-Athletes in the process of exploring their interests and abilities and developing a broad academic experience. This support program promotes excellence, responsibility, and initiative in achieving educational, athletic, personal, and social goals. The emphasis of this program is on the development of the total person. The support program is operated in such a manner as to take advantage of the rich resources and facilities provided by American University in pursuit of excellence.

Proactive Monitoring Program (Guided Study)
The Guided Study Program targets Student-Athletes who may confront a variety of academic challenges. Students meet weekly with either the coordinator or academic counselor and are closely monitored for academic progress. Regular meetings allow for the development of study skills, such as time management and effective reading strategies. Referrals to other campus resources, such as the Writing Center and the Math/Stats Tutoring Lab, are made on an individual basis.
Tutoring Program
The tutoring program is designed to aid and enhance students' academic performance. The program employs both graduate and undergraduate students as peer tutors. Student-Athletes are encouraged to meet regularly with a tutor to address issues with course content.
How do student-athletes access the Academic Support Program?
Student-Athletes may meet with a counselor in the Academic Support Program on a weekly basis to work on study strategies for academic success. Freshman and transfer student-athletes also participate in regular library study sessions. Selected student-athletes meet with the Academic Support Center counselor to address specific academic skills.
Is there an additional fee?
No, the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes is free and available to all student-athletes.
Where do I get additional information about the program?
