The GLBTA Resource Center now has listings for volunteer and internship opportunities in the DC, Maryland and Virginia areas. This list is by no means exhaustive, and is updated as and when we get information on ongoing work opportunities. We list this information as a service to students and organizations. We generally know no more about these internships/volunteer opportunities than what is posted. We try to remove old positions, but you should check with the organization to see whether or not a position is filled before applying. We often leave old internship opportunities on the page because many organizations are continually hiring. For updated information you should check with the organization. The ACLU is our nation's guardian
of liberty. They work daily in courts, legislatures and communities
to defend and preserve America’s original civic values - the Constitution
and the Bill of Rights. They work also to extend rights to segments
of the population that have traditionally been denied their rights,
including Native Americans and other people of color; lesbians, gay
men, bisexuals and transgendered people; women; mental-health patients;
prisoners; people with disabilities; and the poor.
Advocates for Youth is dedicated to creating programs and advocating for policies that help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their reproductive and sexual health. Advocates for Youth provides information, training, and strategic assistance to youth-serving organizations, policy makers, youth activists, and the media in the United States and the developing world. The goal of Advocates' internship program is to provide undergraduate/graduate students with a successful and meaningful opportunity to learn about Advocates' mission and programs, contribute to the work of the organization during a limited time period, and gain meaningful professional experience. Stipend: Advocates offers a limited number of paid
internships. Unpaid internships are also available to students who receive
credit for their work. Unpaid interns will receive an expense stipend
of $200 per month to cover expenses related to their working at Advocates.
Americans United for the Separation of Church and State works exclusively to safeguard the constitutional principle of church-state separation. The position of a field assistant who will report directly to the national field director is open. Primary duties will include database management, information management, mass mailings, mail and email correspondence and other administrative tasks. Other duties will include internet research and help with the production of newsletters, updates and alerts. Applicants should have some experience in administration and office organization, and an ability to relate well to diverse co-workers and constituents. Strong writing and communication skills are also required, as well as basic computer competence. Women and people of color are especially encouraged to apply. They provide services to youth and young adults, ages 12 to 30 years, who are homeless or living in insecure housing. Many of their clients are transgendered, gay, lesbian or bisexual. They also help youth who themselves are parents, as well as parents of youth. Lastly, they work with people who engage in street survival strategies, including sex for favors.
DignityUSA works for respect and justice for all gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons in the Catholic Church and the world through education, advocacy and support. In local chapters across the United States, they worship openly with other GLBT and supportive Catholics, socialize, share personal and spiritual concerns, and work together on educational and justice issues. They believe that they can express their sexuality in a loving, life-affirming manner that is in keeping with Christ's teaching.
The Center Echelon Magazine is an online magazine that publishes articles on GLBT finance, economic development, workplace advocacy, corporate diversity, education, employment and explores the ever evolving GLBT marketplace.Echelon also publishes a weekly newsletter distributed to 3200 GLBT business professionals, multicultural marketers and GLBT media.
The Family Pride Coalition (FPC) has for 25 years been the only national non-profit organization solely dedicated to equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) parents and their families. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., FPC supports nearly 200 membership-based LGBT parenting groups nationwide with a base of 35,000 supporters. GALA Choruses fosters the artistic and organizational development of member choruses through a wide variety of programs and services. GLSEN/DC is the Metropolitan Washington, DC, Chapter of the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN), which was founded in 1990 as the Gay Lesbian Straight Teachers Network, and currently has more than 70 chapters nationwide. The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) is the largest national organization that brings together gay, lesbian, straight, bisexual, transgendered and questioning teachers, parents, students, and concerned citizens from all walks of life, in order to end the destructive effects of anti-gay bias in schools across the country. HIPS’s (Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive) mission is to assist female, male, and transgendered individuals engaging in sex work in Washington, DC in leading healthy lives. Utilizing a harm reduction model, HIPS' programs strives to address the impact that HIV/AIDS, STD’s, discrimination, poverty, violence and drug use have on the lives of individuals engaging in sex work. Joseph's House is a center that provides homes, nursing services, and community activities for formerly homeless men in metropolitan Washington DC who are terminally ill and in the last weeks or months of their illness. While their primary mission is to those with AIDS, as space is available they also welcome men with other terminal illnesses. Joseph's House Volunteer Program lets volunteers come to work at Joseph's House one to four times a year. Volunteers take part in activities such as gardening, cooking Friday night dinners, helping in spring cleaning, event planning and fundraising. They are the nation's leading voice for fairness, inclusion, and tolerance in the GOP. Their party stands at a crossroads. The GOP must choose between fairness and freedom or intolerance and exclusion. Log Cabin works tirelessly to make sure the Republican Party chooses the right path. Ending up on the wrong side of history will cost the GOP for decades to come. So LCR tirelessly strives to achieve liberty and equality for all Americans.
Direct Services. The purpose of the Mautner Project is to serve lesbians with cancer and/or their partners or caregivers. Volunteers facilitate our support groups; provide support over the telephone or in person; or provide daily living assistance such as transportation to a doctor's appointment, child care, pet care, etc. Outreach and Education. Represent the Mautner Project at a variety of community events ranging from local Pride events to health fairs. Receive training that will enable you to educate the community on cancer and other lesbian health issues. Research. Assist with the details of major research projects including participant recruitment, focus group facilitation, data entry and analysis. Administrative support. Assist with clerical details, data entry, and telephone support. Health America:
Media Relations Intern Mental
Health America is seeking journalism/communications students for an
internship in its busy Media Relations department. Intern responsibilities
will include media tracking, various writing projects and assisting
with the 2007 Media Awards competition (information at http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/go/media-awards).
Other tasks assigned as necessary. Successful candidates will have excellent
writing, editing and organizational skills and an interest in advocacy,
current events and working with the media. General knowledge of mental
health issues a plus. Intern is expected to work 2-3 days per week –
hours are flexible (10 hours/week minimum). This internship is unpaid.

provides resources to help young people fight AIDS and support each
other. Unlike any other organization in the Washington, DC area, Metro
TeenAIDS focuses all of its efforts on the special prevention, education,
and treatment needs of young people. Internships become available from

of Washington was founded in 1970 by the Rev. J. E. Paul Breton as the
Community Church in Washington, D.C. It was chartered in 1971 by the
Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches. The church
provides religious, as well as support services to the GLBTA community

The print and web editions are published every Thursday and copies are distributed for free at more than 250 distribution points. Metro Weekly is read by more than 45,000 people in DC, MD & VA, and is nationally recognized for its lively feature stories and interviews.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit (GLLU) is staffed by openly gay, lesbian and transgender members of the department and their allies. Since its inception in June 2000, the GLLU has dedicated itself to serving the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) communities in the Washington Metropolitan area and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
The National Black Justice Coalition is a civil rights organization of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and allies dedicated to fostering equality by fighting racism and homophobia. The Coalition advocates for social justice by educating and mobilizing opinion leaders, including elected officials, clergy, and media, with a focus on Black communities.
The National Center for Transgender Equality
is a national social justice organization devoted to ending discrimination
and violence against transgender people through education and advocacy
on national issues of importance to transgender people.
The National Coalition for LGBT health
is an organization dedicated to increasing the knowledge regarding LGBT
populations' health status, access to and utilization of health care,
and other health-related information, as well as increasing LGBT participation
in the formation of public and private sector policy regarding health
and related issues.
The NGLCC seeks to provide a valuable, in-depth experience for each of its interns. They strive to treat their interns as junior staff members, consequently an intern should expect both substantive and administrative work. Dupont Circle The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force has worked to eliminate prejudice, violence and injustice against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people at the local, state and national level since its inception in 1973. The Task Force creates a world that respects and celebrates the diversity of human expression and identity where all people may fully participate in society. The Task Force has graduate and undergraduate internships available each school session for college and university students or recent graduates covering a variety of disciplines. (NLGLA) is a national professional association of lawyers,
judges and other legal professionals, law students, activists, and affiliated
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) legal organizations.
Established in 1988 and an affiliate of the American Bar Association
since 1992, NLGLA is the national voice for lesbians, gay men, bisexuals,
transgender, and intersex persons in the legal profession. The National Organization for Women (NOW) is the largest organization of feminist activists in the United States. Since its founding in 1966, NOW's goal has been to take action to bring about equality for all women. NOW works to eliminate discrimination and harassment in the workplace, schools, the justice system, and all other sectors of society; secure abortion, birth control and reproductive rights for all women; end all forms of violence against women; eradicate racism, sexism and homophobia; and promote equality and justice in our society. Reel Affirmations, DC's Gay and Lesbian Film Festival You get to chose your level of commitment, and can be an usher, a part of the year long committee's, learn how a festival gets programmed, how events are planned at a non profit organization. The Ummah Endowment Fund is a leader in behavior modification programs and social marketing activities in the war on HIV/AIDS. Ummah utilizes programs, events and other social marketing activities as vehicles for customized messaging targeting specific at-risk demographics for HIV/AIDS. The driving force behind what Ummah does is their ability to influence attitudes and enlighten the HIV/AIDS community. in 1993 to empower and enrich the lives of lesbians of color, through
educational, social and cultural programming, and support services.
Initially WITL brought lesbians of color together through informal social
events, such as poetry readings, dances, community fundraisers, and
workshops. Subsequently, WITL has created a publication titled Women
in the Life. Women in the Life Magazine has been published since November
1993, and the magazine is now distributed quarterly with a substantial

to ending the suffering of all those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
The Washington Blade was first published in 1969 and has grown impressively becoming the weekly news source for Washington’s large and visible Gay community.
