Telephone Service

Now that student ownership of cell phones has reached the point where a vast majority of students no longer require a university-provided telephone service, American University's residene hall room phones have been converted to only allow for the calling of other residence halls and campus offices.  In order to utilize this service, students must provide a standard telephone for their room.  Local calls off campus may be made at no cost from a special phone installed on each floor of the residence hall.  Students may make long-distance phone calls by purchasing a prepaid calling card.

Students who have cell phones will be required to register their cell phone numbers with the university, in compliance with the Housing License Agreement, so they can be reached in an emergency or for necessary university business.  American University continues to work to end "dead spots" on campus by partnering with AT&T and T-Mobile (see your my.american.edu portal for more information).

Additionally, each residence hall has a front desk which can route calls to individual rooms, not unlike the arrangement at a hotel.  The following are the residence hall front desk extensions:

NOTE:  Every on-campus phone number has the prefix 202-885-, followed by the four digit extension.

  Anderson/Centennial Front Desk x 7700
  Hughes Front Desk x 7701
  Leonard Front Desk x 7702
  Letts Front Desk x 7704
  McDowell Front Desk x 7706
  Nebraska Front Desk x 7707

Parking Regulations and Local Transportation

First-year students living in the residence halls are prohibited from bringing cars to campus.  Students wishing to keep a car on campus should visit the Parking and Transportation Services website for the most up-to-date parking policy information.  Additionally, the University is well connected to the rest of Washington, DC via Metro (DC's subway system), Metrobus, the American University Shuttle Service, and AUTO (the American University Transit Organization). For more information about Metro and Metrobus, call 202-637-7000 or visit their website (http://www.metroopensdoors.com).
